Listening to great music, bands and musicians is essential
when studying to play Jazz. So here is a compilation of music
which inspired me the most and which profoundly shaped my
style of playing:
The New Orleans drumming style is very special and important for a
jazzband. So it is crucial for a drummer to understand and to study
that style profoundly in order to be able to adopt and play properly in that genre.
To study this, I put together a Spotify playlist with tracks by the most
important New Orleans drummers of the last 100 years:
THE BIG "4" - This is one of the most important elements in New Orleans drumming: The accent on the "4", and NOT on the "1".
In this video Wynton Marsalis explains the New Orleans drumming style
to an audience of school kids. This is a great lesson for all jazz drummers.
Shannon Powell, the "King of Treme" is one of the outstanding drummers in New Orleans today.
